Eira, Marit Gaup - Beaskadas CD

Sami yoik from Kautokeino-area, Northern Norway.
Marit is a renowned and widely acclaimed singer of traditional Sami yoiks. She performs them in a classical manner with a distinctive touch. In her debut CD we get to hear yoiks from the common classical repertoire along with skillfully selfcomposed tunes. Marit has been yoiking ever since she was a child and she has participated in concerts in Samiland as well as in the Scandinavian countries. She has been awarded first prize in the Easter Sami Grand Prix Yoik Contest in Kautokeino several times, last time was in 2003.
Born, and living in, the Kautokeino area in Samiland, Northern Norway, Marit is a nomadic reindeeerherding Sami. Her northern home is in the summer grazing land Beaskáðas and the southern one is in the winter grazing area of Cuoikaeana, both in the wide municipality of Kautokeino.
