A true legend of folk music makes a spectacular comeback! After a long wait, Värttinä releases a new, amazing
album Kyly on Rockadillo Records. The album ignites a spark in the deepest core of Finnish traditional music –
and at the same time takes it to new, bold dimensions. Värttinä's voice has carried the rich sounds of Karelian
songs from one generation to the next, and this album is a proof of how relevant the band is still. Every note is full
of power and authenticity, honed with years of experience and passion. Värttina is back – better and deeper than
ever before.
Värttinä's roots go back to the 1970’s in Rääkkylä, where Sari and Mari Kaasinen's mother Pirkko, who was
interested in Karelian folklore, encouraged her daughters to perform. Värttinä was born in 1983, and at its peak it
consisted of about twenty children and young people from the village. In 1987 the band already played about
hundred gigs and released its first LP. The band's boisterous and joyful way of life captivated the audience. In
1990, Värttinä’s line-up was five singers and five musicians. Karelian singing style, polyphony and various
European folk music influences combined to create modern world music. After the release of the breakthrough
album Oi Dai in 1991, the band performed at a rate of two hundred gigs a year. Seleniko, released in 1992,
received rave reviews internationally and the band toured extensively from Europe to the United States, Japan
and Australia. Värttinä was invited to compose music for the Lord of the Rings musical, which premiered in
Toronto in 2006. The band received as the first Nordic band the WOMEX Artist Award in 2012. Värttinä has also
received numerous Finnish music awards.
Värttinä has collaborated in a variety of ways across genres. The band has performed as a soloist with the BBC
Concert Orchestra (2015), the Icelandic Sinfonia Nord (2016) and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet's
Kalevala performance (2017). They have also performed with UMO Jazz Orchestra (2018) and many Finnish pop
and rap artists. Värttinä's 14th studio album Kyly was released in April 2025.
