KAL’s new album – between Roma tradition, cinema, memory and the present

The music came first. The name followed.

When KAL emerged from Belgrade onto the international music scene in the early 2000s, the usual categories no longer seemed sufficient. The band combined traditional Roma music from Serbia with rock’n’roll, punk, blues, swing and urban rhythms. Critics tried various descriptions before one finally stuck: Rock’n’Roma.

KAL was founded in 2002 by brothers Dragan and Dušan Ristić. After his brother left the band, Dragan Ristić developed KAL’s musical identity further, turning the group into one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Roma music.

The band’s international breakthrough came with the 2006 album KAL. Produced by Mike Nielsen – whose credits include work with Jamiroquai, Underworld and Natacha Atlas – the album reached number one on the World Music Charts Europe. Its successor, Radio Romanista, reached number two in 2009, followed by Romology in 2013.

Since then, KAL has played more than 2,000 concerts across Europe and the United States, including appearances at Roskilde, WOMEX, Fusion, EXIT and Sziget, as well as New York’s celebrated Joe’s Pub.

Now, after more than a decade without a studio album, KAL returns with Cinema Caravan.

The title says it all: a cinema on the move, a caravan carrying faces, melodies, languages, memories and stories across borders and generations. The screen is not fixed to a wall. It travels with the musicians.

The album’s visual concept becomes particularly personal through an old family photograph featured on its back cover. It shows Dragan Ristić’s grandfather Radosav Ristić, a violinist, together with his brothers and his father Dušan. Between these generations stands Dragan’s father Milan, his most important personal and artistic influence.

The photograph is not nostalgia. It is part of the musical archive from which KAL continues to draw.

But Cinema Caravan does not look back simply to preserve the past. The album deliberately moves beyond the musical comfort zone that first brought KAL international recognition. Serbian Roma traditions remain the foundation, but they meet new musical influences, contemporary forms and the experience of a musician who has spent decades moving between stages, cultures and genres.

Where earlier KAL albums were driven by discovery, energy and rebellion, Cinema Caravan adds something else: experience. Restraint. Space.

For Dragan Ristić, it is KAL’s most important album to date – not because it abandons the past, but because it turns that past into a starting point for something new.

The caravan carries its archive with it. But it never stops moving.
