When Nordic Notes was founded in 2005, it was first and foremost an idea: to make music from Northern Europe audible beyond familiar clichés – curious, open-minded, and with deep respect for both tradition and the present. Twenty years later, in the anniversary year 2025, this idea has become a firmly established point of reference for folk, world and boundary-crossing music.

From Finland to Estonia, from Iceland to Denmark, from archaic soundscapes to contemporary, experimental approaches: Nordic Notes stands for artists who do not treat their cultural roots as museum pieces, but reinterpret them in living, evolving ways. Music that knows where it comes from, yet is firmly rooted in the here and now – and draws its strength precisely from that balance.

That Nordic Notes has always been more than a conventional record label is due to its founder, Christian Pliefke. Operating from the small Franconian town of Langenzenn, he has built a network over the years that reaches far beyond national borders. His motivation has never been the market, but the moment when music truly resonates. Or, as he puts it himself: when listening gives him goosebumps, the real work begins – passing that energy on.

Over the years, an extensive catalogue has emerged, reflecting the diversity of Nordic music in all its facets: acclaimed scene favourites as well as surprising new discoveries. Many of these releases tell not only musical stories, but also personal ones – of encounters, travels and shared experiences, whether at festivals, showcase events or in places far removed from conventional stages.

Just a few weeks after celebrating its 20th anniversary, Nordic Notes now reaches another milestone: in 2026, the label releases its 200th album. This anniversary compilation is not intended as a classic retrospective, but as a snapshot of a musical universe that has grown organically over time. It brings together voices, moods and signatures that have shaped Nordic Notes for two decades – while also pointing clearly toward the future.

Because if these 200 releases demonstrate one thing, it is this: Nordic Notes is not a closed chapter, but an ongoing dialogue between tradition and the present, between regional roots and international openness. This compilation invites listeners to join that dialogue – and to carry it forward.
